A 2-year-old almost drowned.

"When everyone is watching, no one is watching."

I found this article online and it horrified me when I read it.

Here’s a part of the article:

My 2yo daughter nearly drowned and I just can’t seem to stop thinking about it.

She had her feet in the water, I turned away for a minute while holding my 3 month old. I was picking something up from the floor and I heard a splash, I looked and saw her face down in the water. My husband was closer to her so I screamed and he jumped in and she was ok just drank a bunch of pool water…

I keep thinking what if I hadn’t heard the splash or what if I was inside for a moment to get a glass of water or something.

😰

Thank god things turn out well in this case.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as many as 40 people lose their lives through drowning every hour globally.

And in Malaysia, according to the Star, there were 1,340 deaths due to drowning from 2018 to 2022.

This can be worse when it involves a child.

That’s according to a report, a lot of kids drown at big events even if there are many people or adults around.

Everyone assumes there is always someone watching.

When everyone is watching, no one is watching.

This is why we always encourage everyone to never swim alone, whether they’re kids or adults.

Because in a split of second, when people are drowning due to unforeseen circumstances, they will panic.

And it’s hard to act rationally when people are in dire situation and not thinking straight.

To minimise the risk of drowning (for kids), the best way is to attend swimming classes.

This is what one of the replies in the article said about the 2-year-old-kid-almost-drowned incident:

Consider enroll your daughter in water safety classes, which will teach something like:

  • Wait for 10 seconds on the steps before coming into the pool to make sure there is an adult’s presence

  • Learn how to control breathing inside water so that they learn not to swallow water or panic when submerged inside water

  • Learn how to hold on walls or anything that they can grab if they cannot stand in deep water

This is why in Optimum Train Swim School…

We have separated young swimmer classes (for 3-5 years old) to teenager learn-to-swim classes (for 6-17 years old).

In our young swimmer classes, each session lasts 30 minutes and focuses on building a child’s confidence in the water and helping them adapt to the aquatic environment.

We use a “learn through play” approach and introduce essential water survival skills.

At this stage, we don’t teach the four common swimming strokes (front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly) as it can be challenging for young children.

Instead, we focus on developing their understanding of instructions, hand-eye coordination, muscle control, and motor skills.
