Swim and stop every 5 meter?
How do I not feel like I'm gonna die?
Came across to an anonymous post online and here’s what it said:
I dream of being able to swim for a long time without stopping.
I don’t care in the least how fast I am going. I just want to do a comfortable pace freestyle for a few hundred meters.
I’ve only been swimming for a few weeks, does it come in time?
I can’t swim a full 50 before having to stop and catch my breath. I usually do about a half hour, usually around 500m in total, but it’s absolutely broken up at most turns. My pulse is consistently over 160.
And on his last note, he just wished he could swim confidently without feeling like he’s going to die in the pool.
This post recalled MANY very real incidents that happened in our swim school, Optimum Train Swim School.
Every single time when someone came to our center to have their first trial, one of the questions we asked to our new students is:
“Do you know how to swim?”
Some said no; some said yes; and some answered, “I think I know… but can’t swim far la.”
We normally will ask students who answered yes to show what they know about “swimming” so that we can gauge where they should start to learn according to our systematic teaching syllabus.
And kid you not…
Most of the students who claimed they knew how to swim is just like the OP of that anonymous post.
They can’t swim even 5 meter without stopping.
And I’m NOT exaggerating!
This is why it saddens me and the coaches here in OTSS to realise that many Malaysians have NOT known the real definition of swimming.
Or to be more layman term…
They THINK they can swim but in fact, they can’t swim without stopping in the middle of the pool, which can endanger their lives if they do not know how to tread water without their feet touching the ground.
That’s why one of the main things we teach in our teaching syllabus is to teach people how to tread water, besides how to swim 50-meter without stopping, just like what the OP wants.
Unlike other swim schools, Optimum Train Swim School aims to raise the awareness that swimming is more than just a 12-week-program sports.
When you know how to swim for real, it means that you will not feel like dying after swimming 50/100/150/200 meters.
And this is exactly our goal when we teach our students.
